Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) emerged victorious in the 2025 Intercontinental Cup, claiming the title after a dramatic penalty shootout against Flamengo. The match concluded with a score of 1-1 after both regular and extra time, with Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov crucially saving four penalty kicks, enabling PSG to secure a 2-1 win in the shootout at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.

Having enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, PSG added the Intercontinental Cup to their substantial collection, which now includes Ligue 1, the French Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup, and Trophy of Champions. The team's momentum began in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted a goal following a swift counter-attack. Flamengo responded in the 62nd minute, leveling the score with a penalty converted by Jorginho after Marquinhos fouled De Arrascaeta.

The first half was vibrant, as PSG thought they had scored again through Fabian Ruiz, only for VAR to disallow the goal. Flamengo kept the pressure on, forcing multiple saves from Safonov, while PSG suffered a setback with Lee Kang-in's thigh injury. During extra time, both sides had several scoring opportunities, notably from Dembele and Barcola for PSG, but the game remained scoreless, leading to the fateful penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Safonov showcased his skills by saving penalties from Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira, and Luiz Araujo. PSG scored through Vitinha and Nuno Mendes, and despite misses from Dembele and Barcola, the French team celebrated their victory. Midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery commended the team's performance, highlighting their resilience against formidable opponents and emphasizing the need for continued focus as the season progresses.
