Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has announced a remarkable enhancement in rail service reliability for 2025, marking a decrease of more than 50% in service disruptions across its networks compared to the previous year. The state-owned transport operator recorded only 31 disruptions in 2025, a significant drop from 71 incidents in 2024.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke hailed this achievement as a testament to Prasarana's commitment towards refining public transport, after facing harsh criticism in 2024 over recurrent breakdowns and delays that eroded public confidence in the Klang Valley's rail services.
During Prasarana's annual performance update, Loke emphasized the marked improvements since his return to the ministerial post. He attributed the previous persistent technical challenges to dedicated efforts by Prasarana's staff over the past three years that have produced visible enhancements.
One notable upgrade was the adoption of a new performance metric termed Mean Kilometres Before Failure (MKBF), tracking the distance travelled by trains before mechanical or technical failures occur. In 2024, the average was one breakdown per 70,000 kilometres, which has impressively risen to one breakdown for every 790,000 kilometres in 2025.
In line with the increased reliability, public transport usage has surged, with ridership on Prasarana-operated services climbing 11% year-on-year to reach 1.31 million passengers, nearing pre-pandemic levels. This annual performance briefing is part of broader reforms initiated by Loke to enhance the public transport landscape.
Looking forward, Prasarana is focusing on the completion of the often-delayed third LRT line serving Shah Alam. Loke recognized the public's frustration but reiterated that the utmost priority is safety. He noted that existing technical issues with contractors must be resolved prior to progressing to the free-fail run (FFR) phase, an essential step towards final approval.
A meeting is anticipated next week to chart the path forward and to establish a timeline for the FFR. No official inauguration date has been confirmed as of yet.
Additionally, substantial upgrades are planned for ongoing rail services. The Kelana Jaya LRT line will see significant enhancements this year, backed by a RM1 billion allocation in Budget 2026 to replace 26 train units. This line currently accommodates around 250,000 passengers daily.
In 2025, the Kajang MRT line emerged as RapidRail's most frequented service, averaging a daily ridership of 270,000 passengers, indicating increasingly strong reliance on urban rail systems.
