Pakistan Tightens Security Ahead of US-Iran Talks

Pakistan has significantly increased security measures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi amid expectations of a possible second round of talks between the United States and Iran. Although no official confirmation of the negotiations has been announced, authorities have begun large-scale preparations to ensure the safety of any visiting foreign delegations.

According to officials, more than 10,000 police personnel have been deployed across Rawalpindi, along with over 600 checkpoints set up at key locations. Similar arrangements are being implemented in Islamabad, reflecting the high level of alertness surrounding the potential diplomatic engagement. Security has been tightened particularly around sensitive locations such as Nur Khan Airbase and Islamabad International Airport, which will be sealed from midnight as part of precautionary measures.

The heightened security comes after earlier talks between the US and Iran, held in Pakistan on April 11 and 12, ended without a final agreement. Since then, Pakistan has continued diplomatic efforts to host another round of discussions in an attempt to bridge differences between Washington and Tehran. The initiative also follows regional engagements by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military leadership aimed at building consensus on key issues.

Authorities have imposed strict restrictions in several parts of Rawalpindi. Activities such as drone flying, pigeon flying, and aerial firing have been completely banned. In addition, businesses including restaurants, markets, parks, and gyms in selected areas have been ordered to remain closed until further notice. These measures are designed to secure routes and locations that may be used by foreign officials during their visit.

Police have declared a red alert in key zones, with officers stationed on rooftops and along sensitive routes. Access to buildings overlooking these routes has been restricted, and property owners have been instructed to follow strict security guidelines. Hotels and guesthouses have also been directed to maintain detailed records of guests and share daily reports with authorities.

Despite the extensive preparations, officials have clarified that no final decision has been made regarding the timing of the talks. Reports suggesting that negotiations would begin immediately have been dismissed by official sources. However, the ongoing ceasefire between the US and Iran, which is set to expire on April 22, has added urgency to diplomatic efforts.

The situation remains fluid, with Pakistan positioning itself as a key venue for dialogue while ensuring maximum security readiness. Observers note that the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the talks take place and whether they can help ease rising tensions in the region.
