Iranian-American Woman Held In US Arms Trafficking Case

Post by : Sophia Matthew

An Iranian-American woman has been arrested in Los Angeles for allegedly trafficking weapons to African countries on behalf of the Iran government, according to U.S. federal authorities.

The suspect, identified as Shamim Mafi, was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport on April 19, 2026. Officials say she is accused of arranging the sale of military equipment, including drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and large quantities of ammunition.

According to prosecutors, Mafi allegedly worked with a co-conspirator through a company called Atlas International to broker illegal arms deals. Investigators believe these activities took place in multiple locations, including within California. One major deal reportedly involved supplying Iranian-made drones to Sudan’s defense ministry, with the contract valued at more than €60 million.

Authorities claim that Mafi personally earned millions from coordinating meetings and travel arrangements linked to the deal. The complaint also states that she frequently traveled between countries such as Turkey, Oman, and Iran, and had previously lived in Istanbul for several years.

U.S. officials further noted that Mafi has been a lawful permanent resident since 2016 but allegedly maintained strong connections abroad. Investigators are also reviewing her past statements, including claims that her former husband had ties to Iran’s intelligence services.

The case is especially sensitive given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has caused widespread violence, displacement, and humanitarian crisis since 2023. U.S. authorities view the alleged arms transfers as a serious threat, potentially fueling instability in the region.

Mafi has been formally charged and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. She is expected to appear in a federal court in Los Angeles for her first hearing.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials have indicated that further details, including information about other possible individuals involved, may emerge as the case develops.
