OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT App Directory for Third-Party Innovations

Post by : Mara Collins

OpenAI has officially opened its doors to third-party developers, allowing them to submit apps that can be utilized right inside ChatGPT. In tandem with this, the company has launched a new ChatGPT App Directory, accessible via the ChatGPT sidebar or directly at chatgpt.com/apps. OpenAI emphasizes that this platform is not a store per se, but rather a discovery directory for vetted applications.

With this update, ChatGPT’s massive user base of over 800 million can now efficiently locate and use newly vetted third-party applications. Once installed, users can engage these apps by typing their name prefixed with the “@” symbol or selecting them from the tools menu, enabling seamless workflow without the need to exit the chat.

According to OpenAI’s announcement, the app submission process officially began on December 17. Each app will undergo a review process to ensure adherence to OpenAI’s established public guidelines and safety measures, with selected apps expected to be available to users by early 2026.

To assist developers, OpenAI has scheduled a public webinar titled “Build Hour” on January 21, where their engineers will provide insights on how to create, design, and submit applications for ChatGPT while answering developer inquiries interested in joining the initiative.

This new launch broadens OpenAI’s developer ecosystem beyond its previous limited partners. While OpenAI had introduced a GPT Store focused on straightforward text-based tools, the new App Directory enables richer interactions such as buttons, maps, sliders, and various display interfaces. The GPT Store will continue to operate alongside this new development.

Currently, monetization options for apps are restricted. Developers may only direct users to external sites for the sales of physical products. Sales of digital goods, subscriptions, or in-app services are currently prohibited, although OpenAI indicates that more options might arise in the future. All applications must strictly adhere to guidelines concerning privacy policies, must avoid advertisements, and must be suitable for a broad audience, including teens.

OpenAI asserts that this transformation enhances ChatGPT’s functionality beyond a standard chatbot. With live data integration, actionable features, and interactive layouts, ChatGPT is set to become a pivotal hub for essential tools and workflows. This development represents a significant advancement toward a larger OpenAI developer ecosystem integrated into conversations.
