ChatGPT Enhances Collaboration, Addresses Punctuation Issue

After extensive feedback, ChatGPT has finally addressed its overuse of the em dash. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman shared this news on X, describing it as a “small-but-happy win” for frustrated writers and editors. Users can now direct ChatGPT to limit em dash usage, and the AI will comply in future messages.

What was once a minor punctuation quirk evolved into a notable sign of AI-generated writing. Even with explicit requests for “no em dashes,” ChatGPT frequently overlooked these instructions, leading to memes and online humor. This latest update enhances the chatbot’s “custom instructions” feature, allowing users to have more authority over aspects such as tone, style, and now, punctuation.

In addition to the punctuation improvements, OpenAI has introduced Group Chats, a new social functionality that permits interaction with up to 20 users engaging with ChatGPT collectively. The AI can facilitate brainstorming, address inquiries, or mediate discussions, transforming the platform into a collaborative environment rather than merely a solo aide. Currently, this feature is undergoing pilot testing in Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Taiwan, with global expansion anticipated.

This advancement is part of OpenAI's initiative to create a more interactive user experience. Recent experimental features like Sora for short-form AI videos and Atlas, an AI browser for Mac, highlight the company’s ambition to branch out from basic chatting to offering innovative, practical tools.

With issues around em dashes resolved and new collaborative features introduced, ChatGPT is gradually transforming into a more adaptable assistant, balancing meticulousness, style, and social engagement—all while empowering users in how it communicates.
