Today marks the beginning of a significant 4-day workshop titled "International Labour Standards: Building Local Policies and Capacities" in Muscat, Oman. This initiative is hosted by the Ministry of Labour, with backing from the International Labour Organization (ILO). Attendees include experts, government officials, and representatives from various sectors both locally and from neighboring countries. The event commenced with remarks from Dr. Mahad Said Ba'owain, the Minister of Labour.
The primary focus of the workshop is to guide Oman and its surrounding regions in developing labour regulations that meet international standards. It seeks to equip officials with the knowledge necessary for creating improved labour policies, elucidates the responsibilities of governments, employers, and workers, and shares lessons learned from other nations. The overarching aim is to enhance work environments and safeguard worker rights.
Khalid Salim Al Ghammari, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the rapid changes in employment landscapes. He pointed out that international labour standards are vital for governments looking to balance economic growth with the rights of workers and ensuring safe work environments.
Gilbert Houngbo, Director-General of the ILO, remarked that this workshop is the first of its kind in the region. He noted that these standards, in place since 1919, serve to uphold social justice and promote economic advancement and safe workplaces. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in adhering to these guidelines to combat forced labour and enhance worker safety.
Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that the workshop is instrumental in refining Oman's labour legislation while fostering collaboration among government bodies, employers, and employees. Similarly, Nabhan Ahmed Al Battashi, Chairman of the General Federation of Oman Workers, highlighted the country's efforts to modernize its work policies in line with global standards.
The workshop features a variety of training modules, presentations, and discussions aimed at promoting policies that align with global practices, enhancing labour market governance, and leveraging social dialogue for fairness. Participants also gained insights from international experiences regarding occupational safety and health, expressing confidence that this initiative will contribute to safer workplaces, foster economic progress, and protect workers, in accordance with Oman Vision 2040.
