Ola Electric Dismisses LG Energy Tech Leak Allegations

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Ola Electric has categorically denied the recent media speculations implicating it in a leak involving LG Energy Solution’s proprietary pouch cell technology. The firm termed these claims as “unfounded and misleading”, reiterating its commitment to developing India’s premier advanced cylindrical battery, the 4680 Bharat Cell.

The situation escalated following a report from a South Korean news source which suggested that LG Energy Solution was being investigated over an alleged transmission of critical pouch-type lithium-ion battery technology to Ola Electric. This investigation, spearheaded by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service and local police, reportedly centers around a former researcher from LG.

Reports indicate that the information in question pertains to an older pouch cell format, which Ola Electric asserts it does not engage with or utilize. In its statement, Ola emphasized that its 4680 Bharat Cell employs dry-electrode cylindrical technology—a more innovative and efficient battery format already in commercial production.

Interestingly, these allegations have surfaced at a time when Ola is witnessing significant production increases for its Bharat Cell—a landmark achievement marking India's first homegrown large-format battery cell. Ola implied that the apprehension over competition arising from Indian advancements may instigate attempts to undermine its progress.

Currently, Ola Electric boasts 720 patent applications, with 124 patents granted. Its Battery Innovation Center in Bengaluru employs over 250 experts hailing from premier global cell technology agencies. The company operates India’s inaugural Gigafactory, developed with a significant investment of ₹2,500 crore.

In October, Ola introduced the Ola Shakti, a residential energy storage solution driven by the 4680 Bharat Cell, offering double the lifespan and enhanced efficiency compared to conventional batteries, and aiming for a revenue generation of up to ₹1,200 crore by FY27.

As for future plans, Ola Electric is eyeing expansion into large-scale energy storage systems and aims to elevate its total cell manufacturing capacity to 20 gigawatt-hours by the latter half of FY27, marking India’s robust position in the global clean energy arena.
