Snow and Storms Expected in Northern Saudi Arabia

Post by : Mara Collins

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia has forecasted potential snowfall for Thursday across the northern regions, notably Qassim, along with elevated areas of Tabuk and Hail. This weather prediction follows several days of alerts, as Qassim remains under a red alert for heavy rain and flood risks.

Temperatures in elevated regions may drop below zero degrees Celsius, creating favorable conditions for snow along with thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds. Experts highlight that while attention-grabbing, such snowfall is not uncommon during winter.

Saudi astronomer Mohammed bin Reddah Al Thaqafi, affiliated with the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy Sciences, noted that snowfall in northern Saudi Arabia occurs regularly each winter, varying with climate and atmospheric conditions. Snow typically falls between December and February, particularly in areas like Tabuk, Al-Jouf, and Arar, which are influenced by Mediterranean weather systems.

Al Thaqafi pinpointed areas likely to see snow this season, including Jabal Al Lawz, Alaqan, and Al Dhahr in Tabuk; Sakaka and Dumat Al Jandal in Al-Jouf; Arar in the Northern Borders; and Jabal Aja and Jabal Salma in Hail, as well as the higher altitudes of Abha in Asir. Although some seasons may witness less snow, these locations remain consistent for winter weather.

He also cautioned motorists and outdoor enthusiasts to exercise care during snowy conditions, warning about slippery roads and reduced visibility, emphasizing adherence to traffic regulations to avoid accidents. Snowfall has already been reported on Jabal Al-Lawz in Tabuk, where the peaks are currently blanketed in white.

According to the National Center for Meteorology, snow alongside unpredictable weather is expected to persist from early afternoon through evening. The forecast highlights the possibility of moderate to severe thunderstorms triggering flash floods, hail, and strong winds in various regions. NCM spokesperson Hussein Al Qahtani reassured the public that conditions are being closely monitored and dismissed social media claims of widespread flooding in Riyadh as misinformation. He encouraged reliance on official weather updates as instability continues across the Kingdom.
