Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Thursday for a continuation of his arraignment, now set for January 7. No reason for the delay was provided, though the defense requested it.
Three days after his arrest, Reiner, wearing a blue protective vest and eyeglasses, appeared quietly in court. He is charged with fatally stabbing his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner, 78, and photographer-producer Michele Reiner, 70, at their Brentwood mansion in the early hours of Sunday. The killings occurred hours before a planned evening gathering with former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, the former first lady revealed.
Nick Reiner, who has publicly struggled with drug addiction, was arrested near a downtown Los Angeles park close to the University of Southern California. Authorities say he was taken into custody without incident. He remains held in a downtown jail on suspicion of murder, with bond set. If convicted on two counts of first-degree murder, he could face life without parole or the death penalty.
Defense attorney Alan Jackson offered few comments, calling it a “continuance of arraignment” and describing the case as “devastating” with “complex and serious issues.” Reiner’s siblings, Jake, 34, and Romy, 27, issued a statement expressing their grief: “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents… is something no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Investigators have confirmed a knife was used but have not released further details. Motive and potential involvement of drugs remain unclear. Autopsies will determine the exact cause and timing of death. Reports indicate a disagreement occurred at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien the night before the killings.
The case continues to unfold as the Reiner family and Los Angeles community grapple with the shocking tragedy.
