Girona Coach Míchel Takes Stand Against Livakovic's Refusal to Play

Post by : Mara Collins

On Thursday, Girona's head coach Míchel addressed the situation surrounding Croatia's goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, announcing he will no longer be part of the team. The coach criticized Livakovic for prioritizing his international career over the club's needs.

Míchel revealed that the backup goalkeeper expressed his desire to leave Girona, citing concerns about his chances for the World Cup as his primary focus. According to his coach, Livakovic refused to participate in games fearing it could jeopardize potential transfers, as he can only represent two clubs in one season and has already played for Fenerbahce.

The coach recounted a particular instance earlier this month when he urged Livakovic to play in a Copa del Rey match, only for him to decline. This subsequently compelled the regular starting goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga, to step in despite suffering from flu-like symptoms. Míchel lamented that this predicament leaves the squad with just one healthy goalkeeper until the winter transfer window opens.

Míchel felt compelled to go public with the details, stating that fans deserved transparency. Gazzaniga, who has been part of the team for three years, has had a season filled with ups and downs, including recent critical errors that led to goals against Elche.

Currently sitting in 18th place, Girona's relegation battle is further intensified by this goalkeeper crisis, as the team strives to maintain its position in the top tier.
