Luthra Brothers Deported: Goa Nightclub Blaze Investigation Intensifies

Post by : Raina Carter

The Luthra brothers, who operated a well-known nightclub in Goa, have returned to India after being deported from Thailand on Tuesday. Gaurav and Saurabh Luthra, owners of “Birch by Romeo Lane,” were detained by Thai authorities following their flight to Phuket just hours after a catastrophic fire at their nightclub.

The tragic incident occurred on December 6 in Arpora, Goa, claiming the lives of 25 individuals, including 20 employees and five tourists. This fire stands as one of the deadliest nightclub tragedies in recent history, with reports indicating over 100 patrons were dancing at the time of the blaze.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the fire ignited due to electronic fireworks used during a performance. The flames rapidly engulfed the venue after the roof ignited. Authorities suspect that the nightclub's construction materials, notably bamboo, exacerbated the fire's spread. Eyewitnesses reported frantic scenes as attendees attempted to escape, with many purportedly trapped in the kitchen alongside staff.

Compounding the crisis, the club's restricted entry and exit routes, along with its proximity to the Arpora River, hindered timely rescue efforts, contributing to the substantial death toll.

Following their escape to Thailand, the brothers were taken into custody on December 11 as they left their hotel in Phuket. Subsequently, they were moved to Bangkok and then returned to India. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice had been issued, facilitating the international cooperation that led to their arrest.

Upon landing in Delhi, the brothers were immediately taken into police custody and are scheduled to appear before a local court. Investigators are aiming for a transit remand to facilitate their transfer to Goa for further questioning. They are facing serious charges of culpable homicide and negligence, as the nightclub reportedly breached essential safety regulations.

Currently, Goa Police have apprehended five individuals linked to the case, including managers and staff from the nightclub. The inquiry is progressing as authorities review safety certifications, construction permits, and adherence to safety protocols to establish accountability for this devastating incident.

This incident has reignited critical discussions about safety measures at nightlife establishments throughout the nation, particularly during busy weekends, as the families of victims continue their quest for justice amidst the aftermath of the horrific fire.
