Kim Jong Un Celebrates Return of Troops from Russia

In a heartfelt ceremony, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un welcomed back a group of soldiers from the Korean People’s Army (KPA) who recently completed a mission in Russia, according to state media KCNA.

During his address, Kim lauded the 528th Regiment of Engineers for their "heroic deeds" and remarkable bravery throughout their 120-day assignment abroad. This regiment was dispatched to Russia in early August to undertake combat and engineering tasks in the Kursk area amidst the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Footage released by KCNA showcased the troops' return, with Kim personally greeting the soldiers, including one in a wheelchair. The event was attended by families, military commanders, party leaders, and enthusiastic crowds in Pyongyang on Friday.

The North Korean authorities reported that nine soldiers lost their lives during this mission. Kim referred to their sacrifices as a “deeply felt loss” and declared that the regiment would be awarded the Order of Freedom and Independence. Additionally, the deceased soldiers will be honored posthumously with the title of Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and various other distinctions.

According to KCNA, the regiment excelled in clearing hazardous zones under combat conditions and demonstrated “absolute loyalty” to the Workers' Party of Korea and the nation. Kim emphasized the regiment's discipline, political training, and unity, setting them as a model for all armed forces.

This event underscores North Korea's ongoing tradition of publicly honoring soldiers allied with Russian forces. Last year, under a mutual defense agreement, North Korea deployed around 14,000 troops to assist in the Kursk region. Estimates from South Korean, Ukrainian, and Western sources indicate that over 6,000 of these troops have died.

The statements made by Kim and the ceremony itself reflect North Korea's steadfast support for its military and the regime's close relationship with Russia. By underscoring themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and courage, the leadership seeks to inspire national pride and bolster military morale among its populace.
