Usman Khawaja's Second Gabba Test Absence Due to Back Issues

Post by : Mara Collins

Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja will not participate in the second Test at the Gabba due to persistent back spasms sustained during the first match in Perth. Though he returned briefly to training, Khawaja has yet to fully recuperate and will continue his rehabilitation with the team. No alternate player has been announced for his position.

Khawaja's absence paves the way for Travis Head to take on the opening role after his commendable display in Perth, where he amassed 123 runs off just 83 deliveries in the second innings. The squad boasts other batting talents such as Josh Inglis and Beau Webster, with Inglis recently achieving a century against the England Lions, while Webster narrowly missed selection for the Perth match.

The third Test in Adelaide starts on December 17, granting Khawaja two weeks for recovery. Yet, uncertainties linger over whether he will regain his position if Head and other batsmen excel during his absence. Khawaja’s recent performance has been under scrutiny, with an average of 31.84 since the 2023 Ashes and a solitary century in 45 innings.

Khawaja initially incurred the injury on the opening day at Perth Stadium. Following a quick collapse by England, he could not open due to time spent off the field. When he batted at No. 4, he managed only 2 runs before being dismissed by Brydon Carse. On the second day, he fielded at first slip, successfully taking a catch but strained his back attempting another, which led to Head's superb century opportunity.

This ongoing injury casts shadows over Khawaja’s Test career, especially if Head and emerging players continue to shine. The team management will keenly observe his recovery to inform future selection decisions.

The scenario underscores international cricket's physical demands and the hurdles players face returning from injuries while under pressure to perform well. Khawaja’s recovery and subsequent performance in Adelaide will play a vital role in deciding his future role in the Australian Test setup.

Khawaja's absence opens the door for others to establish their roles, reflecting the fierce competitiveness of team selection and the significance of fitness and form at the highest level of cricket.
