John Main Introduces New Cabinet Ministers for Nunavut

Nunavut's Premier John Main has officially assigned duties to the territory's eight newly appointed cabinet ministers, who were sworn in during a ceremony on Thursday following their election at the leadership forum earlier this week.

Main will maintain his role as the territory's leader while also taking on additional responsibilities as Finance Minister and Minister of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs. His portfolio includes immigration, senior services, the utility rates review council, and oversight of the Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis Commission and Board.

George Hickes will serve as deputy premier, managing the departments of Justice, Transportation, Labour, Infrastructure, as well as overseeing the Human Rights Tribunal. David Akeeagok has been appointed government house leader, along with responsibilities as Minister of Education and for Nunavut Arctic College. Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster will head the Department of Health and spearhead initiatives focused on suicide prevention. Gwen Healey Akeorok is set to manage Family Services and oversee Qulliq Energy Corporation, focusing on issues relating to homelessness, poverty reduction, and women's status. Brian Koonoo is tasked with managing the Environment, Culture and Heritage, Languages, and energy sectors. Cecile Nelvana Lyall will take charge of the Nunavut Housing Corporation. Craig Simailak will lead Community Services, overseeing mines, trade, the Nunavut Development Corporation, and the Nunavut Business Credit Corporation. Lastly, Annie Tattuinee will be responsible for Human Resources and the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission.
