Sandesh Jhingan Critiques Costly Messi Tour in India

Post by : Mara Collins

Sandesh Jhingan, captain of the Indian men’s football team, has voiced significant concerns regarding the substantial funds allocated to Lionel Messi’s renowned ‘GOAT Tour’ in India. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he challenged the rationale behind spending crores for a brief exhibition tour while Indian football grapples with existential challenges. This situation has led him to ponder whether there is genuine commitment to nurturing the future of national football.

The tour evoked immense enthusiasm throughout India, attracting throngs of fans in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Spectators paid premium prices just to see the football icon alongside stars like Rodrigo de Paul and Luis Suarez. Although the public turnout reflected a profound adoration for the sport, Jhingan emphasized that it also highlighted the nation's misaligned priorities, particularly during a period when domestic football leagues are inactive.

He highlighted that Indian football is currently enduring one of its bleakest phases. Jhingan warned of the imminent danger of the entire system collapsing, with no active domestic leagues scheduled. Both the Indian Super League and I-League remain dormant, and there is no established broadcasting partner. He suggested that this lack of infrastructure and backing is edging the sport toward shutdown.

The defender articulated a painful reality for Indian athletes, stating that although fans are eager to spend lavishly on international stars, they fail to provide the same support for local talent and leagues. According to him, India may cherish the game, but the backing for homegrown players is insufficient.

The Kolkata leg of the tour faced its own set of challenges, witnessing disarray at Salt Lake Stadium. Numerous fans expressed disappointment, claiming they couldn’t see Messi adequately despite pricey tickets, as he spent a short amount of time on the field, surrounded by various dignitaries. This situation resulted in confusion and ultimately led to the arrest of event organizer Shatadru Datta.

Looking back at the entire event, Jhingan expressed his joy at the full stadiums and strong interest in football. However, he added that the stark contrast with the struggling state of Indian football left him profoundly disturbed. While he acknowledged the criticism directed at the national team’s performance, he insisted that those results cannot be dissociated from the underlying system.

Jhingan explained that football relies heavily on a robust structure, consistent stability, and a long-term vision. He stressed that without careful planning and investment, players cannot be expected to deliver outstanding performances on the pitch. In spite of his discontent, he concluded on an optimistic note, stating that Indian football has experienced successful periods in the past and can thrive again with the right initiatives.
