The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation oversight body, has terminated four flight inspectors tasked with ensuring IndiGo's safety amidst operational turmoil. Their dismissal follows significant oversight lapses that contributed to a recent airline crisis.
This month saw IndiGo, the country's largest airline, land in hot water as it canceled a massive number of flights, leaving countless travelers stranded. While disruptions peaked on December 5, the airline claims that operations have now normalized. To enhance monitoring, the DGCA has assigned two teams to IndiGo's Gurugram office, focusing on operational aspects such as crew management and customer service compliance, necessitating daily reports to assess the airline's status and challenges.
One of the DGCA's teams is scrutinizing various operational aspects, from pilot staffing and crew utilization to training and unplanned absences. The other team is evaluating passenger experiences during the crisis—covering issues like refund processing, compensation, and baggage services amid the widespread cancellations.
Moreover, the DGCA has mandated that IndiGo reduce its daily flight operations by 10 percent, impacting over 200 flights from its usual count of around 2,200. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized that this step is necessary to stabilize the airline and prevent further passenger inconvenience, insisting that IndiGo adhere to ministry regulations, including fare controls.
Additionally, IndiGo has announced compensation measures for passengers significantly affected between December 3 and 5, offering travel vouchers of Rs 10,000 for future flights within the next year. This offer supplements the government-mandated compensation of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for last-minute cancellations. IndiGo has expressed regret for the disruptions and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe, reliable travel for its customers.
