Devastating Fire Erupts Early Morning

Per the Albany Police Department, the blaze started on the morning of December 4. Firefighters and police arrived promptly, but the residence was completely consumed by flames. Emergency responders learned that multiple individuals were trapped inside the two-story house.

Four adults were located within the residence and immediately received care from emergency personnel before being transported to the hospital. Two were subsequently sent to a specialized burn unit for further treatment. Tragically, despite medical intervention, Sahaja, who had suffered extensive burns covering nearly 90% of her body, could not be saved.

Authorities initially withheld her identity until her family could be notified. Subsequently, her relatives confirmed that the deceased was indeed Sahaja Reddy Udumala.

Fundraiser Established for Funeral and Repatriation

A fundraising initiative has been launched by her cousin, Rathna Gopu, aiming to cover funeral expenses, repatriation of Sahaja’s remains to India, and other urgent family needs. The fundraiser page describes Sahaja as a dedicated and ambitious young woman who came to the U.S. to pursue a bright future.

Gopu shared that Sahaja fought valiantly for her life despite her extensive injuries. However, her condition deteriorated, eventually leading to complete organ failure.

“Sahaja embodied dreams, hope, and ambition. Losing her so abruptly has shattered our family,” wrote Gopu, highlighting the emotional and financial burdens they are now facing as they plan to bring Sahaja home.

The fundraiser has achieved over USD 109,000 towards a target of USD 120,000, with contributions from friends, peers, and members of the Indian community in both the U.S. and abroad.
