Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan has taken a humorous approach to the lackluster performance of his eagerly awaited action flick War 2 at the box office.
Released on August 14 during the Independence Day weekend, War 2 features Hrithik alongside Jr NTR and is part of the expansive YRF Spy Universe, which includes hits like Ek Tha Tiger and Pathaan. Despite soaring expectations, the film garnered mixed feedback and did not reach its estimated box office targets, amassing ₹236.55 crore in India and ₹364.35 crore globally, falling short of its ₹400 crore production budget. Detractors cited lackluster writing and inadequate VFX as core issues that hampered the film's effectiveness.
During a recent launch event in Dubai at Coca Cola Arena, Hrithik was warmly introduced as a “global icon” by the host, to which the audience responded with enthusiasm. In a witty reply, Hrithik acknowledged the praise, stating, “That’s very kind of you… My film just bombed at the box office, so this love feels great. Thank you.” His candidness earned him applause, highlighting his relatable demeanor.
Earlier, Hrithik shared behind-the-scenes glimpses from the film on Instagram. Reflecting on his role as Kabir, he mentioned, “Playing Kabir was a blast. I felt at ease and knew him well. It was the kind of role where I could just do my job and head home.” He commended director Ayan Mukerji for the supportive environment on set, emphasizing how enjoyable the experience was due to the director’s encouraging energy.
Hrithik also expressed his thoughts on the film's unpredictable results, admitting that although everything seemed ideal during production, he had a nagging concern: “This is too easy… I know this too well.” He noted that not every film needs to be a challenge, advising himself to “just relax.”
In addition to Hrithik and Jr NTR, War 2 included performances by Kiara Advani and Ashutosh Rana. The film faced tough competition from Rajinikanth’s Coolie, which influenced its box office performance. Nevertheless, Hrithik's clever humor and honest reflections have endeared him to fans, showcasing his thoughtful handling of disappointments.
