The draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled for Friday, preceding the tournament set to unfold from June 11 to July 19 across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. A total of 48 nations will participate, with the Qatar national team earning its spot by finishing first in Group A during the fourth round of Asian qualifiers, ahead of Oman and the UAE.
This marks Qatar's second consecutive World Cup appearance and its inaugural qualification through the standard process, following its hosting duties for the 2022 event. The ceremony will be conducted at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, where the 48 teams will be allocated into 12 groups of four.
FIFA has categorized the teams into four tiers according to the rankings as of November 19. The host countries—USA, Canada, and Mexico—are classified in the top tier irrespective of their rankings. Qatar falls into the third tier alongside nations including Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, ensuring that it won’t encounter these teams at the group stage.
The second tier consists of teams like Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, Iran, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria, and Australia. Pot four will feature teams such as Jordan, Cape Verde, Ghana, Curacao, Haiti, New Zealand, and the victors of European and global playoffs.
A significant Arab representation is anticipated for World Cup 2026, with seven teams already qualified: Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. Iraq could join through a global playoff in March, potentially increasing the number of Arab teams to eight. Notably, Tunisia, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia will be making their seventh appearances, Algeria their fifth, and Egypt their fourth, while Jordan will debut. Qatar, after hosting in 2022, will return.
During the draw, FIFA will assign teams from each pot to groups A to L, ensuring a systematic allocation. The three host nations are pre-designated: Mexico will top Group A, Canada will lead Group B, and the USA will occupy Group C. FIFA will also arrange to keep the highest-seeded teams, such as Spain, Argentina, France, and England, from clashing too early in the tournament by directing them on distinct paths toward the semi-finals.
A crucial rule maintains that no group can contain more than one team from the same confederation, with UEFA teams, which encompass 16 nations, allowed a maximum of two per group. Other continental federations will see only one team per group. FIFA will finalize the group stage configurations by December 6, offering fans an opportunity to prepare for the matches.
This structured methodology is designed to uphold balance within the competition, promote fair play, and ensure an exhilarating World Cup 2026 experience, marked by unprecedented Arab representation.
