Hardik Pandya Tops Yuvraj Singh’s T20I All-Round Record

Post by : Mara Collins

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya achieved a remarkable milestone in T20 international cricket, overtaking the legendary Yuvraj Singh. Hardik is now recognized for the most occasions an Indian player has scored a half-century and taken a wicket in the same T20I match. This exceptional feat came during the fifth and final T20I against South Africa on Friday. Hardik's performance further cements his status as one of India's leading all-rounders in the format.

With an attacking style and confidence, Hardik entered the game after India had set a solid foundation, courtesy of early fireworks from Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. He teamed up with Tilak Varma to aggressively challenge the South African bowlers from the outset, delivering powerful shots across the pitch, including impressive fours and towering sixes that put significant pressure on the Proteas bowlers. His batting showcased a splendid blend of power, timing, and experience.

Hardik's innings totaled 63 runs off just 25 balls, featuring five fours and five sixes, reflecting an extraordinary strike rate of 252. While he conceded 41 runs in three overs with the ball, he made a crucial break by dismissing Dewald Brevis—who had swiftly scored 31 runs off 17 balls—at a pivotal moment in the match.

This match marked the fourth instance for Hardik where he scored a half-century while claiming at least one wicket in a T20I for India, surpassing Yuvraj Singh, who managed this feat three times. Virat Kohli is also part of this elite club, achieving the same twice during T20 World Cup matches against Pakistan in 2012 and West Indies in 2016. Shivam Dube has accomplished this on two occasions as well.

This series signified Hardik’s return to international cricket, and he made it spectacular with notable performances. He concluded as the third-highest run-scorer in the series, amassing 142 runs in three innings at a phenomenal average of 71 and a strike rate of 186.84. He recorded two half-centuries, both contributing to victories for India, and also took three wickets in the series. Despite a slightly elevated economy rate, his ability to deliver key moments was evident.

In the match, South Africa won the toss and opted to field first. India’s openers established a quick start, putting up 63 runs in just 5.4 overs. Sanju Samson scored 37 off 22 balls while Abhishek Sharma added 34 from 21 deliveries. Following the fast dismissals of Samson and captain Suryakumar Yadav, stability was restored through a remarkable partnership of 105 runs between Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. Tilak played a steady hand with 73 runs off 42 balls, enabling India to set a formidable total of 231 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing the daunting target of 232, South Africa began well with a 69-run opening partnership. Quinton de Kock spearheaded the innings with a brisk 65 runs from 35 balls, maintaining his strong form against India. Nevertheless, once Varun Chakravarthy accounted for Reeza Hendricks, India slowly regained control. Dewald Brevis posed a brief threat with an aggressive innings, but upon his dismissal, South Africa began to lose wickets at regular intervals, ultimately compiling 201 for 8, falling short by 30 runs.

India’s bowlers played a crucial role in this victory. Varun Chakravarthy stood out with his four-wicket haul, ending the series with a total of 10 wickets at an excellent average. Jasprit Bumrah was economical and effective with two wickets, while Arshdeep Singh contributed with a vital breakthrough.

For his all-round heroics, Hardik Pandya was honored as Player of the Match. Varun Chakravarthy earned the Player of the Series accolade for his consistent bowling throughout the series. India concluded the series with a 3-1 victory, finishing on a high note as they build confidence for future T20 challenges.
