Vodafone Idea Gains Ground as Government Evaluates Support Post-SC Ruling

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Vodafone Idea (Vi) saw its shares rise in early trading on Tuesday, December 2, following reports indicating the government is poised to consider a formal request for assistance from the telecom operator. The stock jumped as much as 3.9% to ₹10.32 on the NSE, reflecting renewed investor confidence amidst the company’s ongoing financial challenges.

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia remarked that the Department of Telecommunications would take action once Vi submits an official appeal. He added that the Supreme Court's recent decision requires careful analysis to ensure any measures comply with legal standards. According to the report, the government aims to wrap up its evaluation in the coming weeks, with recommendations likely by the end of the year.

This positive sentiment stems from a pivotal development in November 2025. The Supreme Court recently clarified that the government is not limited to reviewing only Vodafone Idea’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) liabilities for the financial year 2016–17. The court recognized that Vi's request extends beyond just additional AGR dues to encompass all related financial obligations.

Currently, the company faces additional AGR claims amounting to approximately ₹9,450 crore, with total demands exceeding ₹83,500 crore as of March 2025. This clarification opens the door for the Centre to reevaluate the overall dues structure, marking a significant departure from previous constraints.

The positive impact is evident beyond Vodafone Idea itself. Shares of Indus Towers, a key infrastructure ally for Vodafone Idea, rose more than 1% to ₹401.20. Given that Vi leases thousands of towers from Indus, any positive turn in Vi’s finances directly affects tower leasing agreements and revenue predictability for Indus.

As the government readies to evaluate the situation and the company signals its intent to present a proposal, the market is exuding cautious optimism. Investors are eagerly awaiting the final outline of any potential relief package, which could define the next chapter in Vodafone Idea’s lengthy recovery journey.
