Veteran Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar passed away on Friday at age 90. He breathed his last around 6:30 a.m. at his home in Devvar, Latur, following a prolonged illness for which he was receiving home care. Shivraj Patil, who served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, held various significant Union ministerial roles throughout his esteemed political career, making noteworthy contributions to India's constitutional and parliamentary framework.
Originating from Chakur, Latur, Patil was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times representing the Latur constituency. Despite losing the 2004 elections, he continued serving in influential roles, including as Union Home Minister, via the Rajya Sabha. His passing has elicited profound sorrow from Congress party members and extended condolences to his family.
A well-respected and seasoned figure in Indian politics, Shivraj Patil obtained his Science degree from Osmania University and later studied Law at Mumbai University. He won his inaugural Lok Sabha election from Latur in 1980 and remained active in parliament until 1999, esteemed as a prominent leader.
During his career, he held vital ministerial roles under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996 and represented India in numerous international parliamentary gatherings. Patil was also entrusted with various key positions within the Congress party during Sonia Gandhi’s leadership.
Following the 2004 election loss, he was appointed as Union Home Minister, signifying the party's confidence in his abilities. He resigned in 2008 after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, taking moral responsibility for the security issues that arose during his time in office.
