FIFA has officially revealed that the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup is scheduled for January 2028. This landmark tournament will take place from January 5 to January 30, although the exact host country has yet to be confirmed. The timing suggests a likely location in a warm climate, as the decision received approval during a FIFA Council meeting in Doha, Qatar.
This new competition will showcase 16 teams internationally, aiming to enhance the visibility of women’s football at the club level, mirroring the expanded men’s Club World Cup format. While the tournament might coincide with certain European leagues, such as the Women’s Super League, it won’t interfere with the Women’s Champions League, which pauses during January. Additionally, the NWSL in the U.S. will be in its offseason during this period.
The competition will be structured with four groups of four teams, leading to knockout rounds beginning from the quarterfinals. A preliminary “play-in” round featuring six teams will determine three additional participants for the final 16-team lineup.
Europe is set to have the most representation, with five guaranteed spots. Teams from Asia, Africa, South America, and the Concacaf region will each contribute two teams, while the play-in stage will include one team from Oceania. FIFA aims for this tournament to enhance global interest in women’s club football and foster competitive spirit among leading teams worldwide.
