Renewed Violence Erupts in Gaza and West Bank Amid Ongoing Truce

Post by : Bianca Hayes

A surge of violence unfolded on Tuesday, exacerbating feelings of unrest in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, raising alarms over the stability of the ongoing ceasefire established in early October.

In southern Gaza, a journalist named Mohamed Wadi lost his life in an Israeli drone strike in Khan Younis, as confirmed by medical personnel at Nasser Hospital who received his remains. Wadi, known for capturing footage via a drone, joins the ranks of many Palestinian journalists who have died while documenting the ongoing conflict.

Simultaneously, another individual was reported shot near the eastern fringes of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, according to Al-Awda Hospital's reports.
The Gaza Health Ministry announced that over 350 Palestinians have died throughout the area since the Oct. 11 ceasefire took effect amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. While Israel did not immediately respond to the reports of deaths on Tuesday, authorities have previously indicated that such incidents often respond to militant fire.

Both Israel and Hamas continue to exchange allegations about ceasefire violations, maintaining heightened tensions throughout the densely populated region.

In parallel, conditions in the occupied West Bank worsened. Israeli forces fatally shot a suspect accused of attacking two soldiers with a knife near the settlement of Ateret, situated north of Ramallah. Israel’s Mada rescue service reported that the soldiers sustained light injuries.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that an 18-year-old Palestinian died in that vicinity, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.

Further south, in the vicinity of Hebron, Israeli troops shot a 17-year-old Palestinian labeled as the perpetrator of a car-ramming incident that injured a soldier. The military claimed the suspect posed a risk to troops when attempting to flee arrest.

Following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that ignited the Gaza war last year, the Israeli army has intensified its operations throughout the West Bank. Palestinians argue that many of those killed in these missions are civilians, demonstrators, or individuals disconnected from armed factions.
The recent weeks have witnessed a rise in assaults on Palestinian communities by settlers, further heating up the atmosphere.

In Nablus, tensions escalated when Israeli forces razed the residence of Abdul Karim Sanoubar on Tuesday. Sanoubar, currently in detention, is accused of bombing vehicles in central Israel earlier this year. This operation prompted the evacuation of 13 nearby residences, with plumes of smoke billowing from the scene as the structure fell.

Additionally, cross-border fire persisted in the north, with Israel conducting further strikes on southern Lebanon, part of a routine of near-daily exchanges, accusing Hezbollah of breaching last year’s U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
