Television and film producer Ektaa Kapoor has spoken out after the Indian government recently banned 25 online streaming platforms, also called OTT apps. One of these banned platforms is ALTT, which was once linked to Ektaa Kapoor. But she has now made it very clear that she and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, are not connected to ALTT in any way anymore.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting decided to block 25 OTT platforms. These apps were banned for showing content that was called "obscene, vulgar, and offensive." Some of the banned apps include ULLU, ALTT, Desiflix, Boomex, and HotX VIP.
Officials said these apps were breaking the law by showing very adult and inappropriate content. Before making the decision, the government spoke to different departments like the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Ministry of Law, and even child and women rights experts.
The action was taken under the Information Technology Act of 2000 and the IT Rules of 2021. The apps and websites linked to these platforms are now blocked, and notices have been sent to make sure they cannot be accessed anymore.
After news came out about ALTT being one of the banned platforms, Ektaa Kapoor posted a clear message on social media platform X (earlier called Twitter). She said that both she and her mother had stepped away from ALTT in June 2021.
The full message read:
“Balaji Telefilms Limited, listed on the BSE and NSE, is a professionally run media organization and following the recent amalgamation of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. (previously its wholly owned subsidiary) duly approved by the Hon’ble NCLT, it operates ALTT wef June 20, 2025.”
She added:
“Media reports have been in circulation about ALTT being disabled by the authorities, however, contrary to such reports, Ms. Ektaa Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT and they had stepped down from their association with ALTT way back in June 2021.”
The statement also asked all media outlets to stop spreading false information and report only verified facts.
She ended the note by saying,
“Balaji Telefilms Limited is fully compliant of all applicable laws and continues to operate its business with the highest standards of corporate governance.”
ALTT was a digital entertainment platform started by Balaji Telefilms. It showed different types of content including web series and short films. However, many of its shows had adult themes which often drew criticism.
After June 2021, ALTT was no longer handled by Ektaa Kapoor or her mother. A change in company structure was approved in court, and now the platform is run separately from Balaji Telefilms.
The government says it acted to protect viewers, especially young people and children. Many of the banned platforms were free to use or had very cheap subscriptions, which made it easy for anyone to access their content. Since many of the shows included scenes that were not suitable for general audiences, the government decided to act.
Ektaa Kapoor’s public message is important because it clears up confusion about her link to ALTT. She has said firmly that she is no longer involved and hasn’t been for over three years. At the same time, the ban on the 25 OTT platforms shows that the government is watching digital content closely to make sure it follows the law.
As India’s online entertainment world grows, it is becoming more important to follow rules that keep all viewers safe—especially children. With more platforms coming up every day, the balance between creative freedom and responsible content is something the industry must continue to work on.
