Under the guidance of coach Helmi Toulan, Egypt is looking to excel in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025. The Pharaohs are set to commence their Group C journey against Kuwait today at the Lusail Stadium, alongside Jordan and the UAE. This marks Egypt's sixth participation in the tournament, where they previously claimed the title in 1992 and reached the semi-finals on two occasions, most notably in Qatar in 2021.
Unfortunately, several key players will not be joining the squad. Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush are currently engaged with their respective clubs, Liverpool and Manchester City, as the main team gears up for the Africa Cup of Nations starting December 21 in Morocco. Despite these setbacks, Toulan is confident that his team can showcase their potential by blending seasoned players with young talent.
Toulan remarked, "I was appointed as the national team coach for a short term. We had a solid preparation phase with friendlies against Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria, which allowed us to evaluate the team and create a robust mix of youth and experience. Our ambitions are high, and I have complete faith in the players’ ability to perform admirably in the tournament."
He also emphasized the vital role of Egyptian fans, whether in Doha or back home, believing their support will invigorate the team. The Pharaohs are determined to make a significant impact in the Arab Cup, demonstrating the strength and resilience of Egyptian football, even in the absence of their star players.
Kuwait, on the other hand, enters the tournament on a high note, having secured a 2-0 victory over Mauritania in the qualifiers at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. This will be Kuwait's ninth entry into the Arab Cup, and they aspire to clinch their first title under Portuguese coach Hélio Sousa. Sousa is focusing on long-term development while aiming for success in the opening match.
Sousa commented, "We have conducted six preparatory matches since last September, concentrating on building a cohesive team capable of consistent performance. Facing a strong opponent like Egypt, our aim is to play well and achieve victory while laying the groundwork for future successes."
Historically, the two teams have faced off twice in the Arab Cup, with Egypt winning 1-0 in 1992 and Kuwait claiming a 4-1 victory in 1998. With a large turnout expected at the iconic Lusail Stadium, both teams are eager to enhance their historical records and make a lasting impression in the tournament’s early rounds.
For Egypt, this tournament serves as an opportunity to assess emerging talents and maintain competitive momentum ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. Conversely, Kuwait is dedicated to fostering team unity and achieving its inaugural Arab Cup triumph. This matchup is set to be a thrilling clash that highlights the rising standards of football within the Arab region.
