Authorities in Ecuador have confirmed the tragic passing of 33-year-old Mario Pineida, a defender for Barcelona de Guayaquil, who was fatally shot on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in Guayaquil. The attack resulted in another fatality and left a third victim injured. The Interior Ministry acknowledged Pineida's death but refrained from providing additional details regarding the incident. In an official statement, Barcelona de Guayaquil expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their player.

Pineida kickstarted his professional journey with Independiente del Valle between 2010 and 2015, before making a switch to Barcelona de Guayaquil in 2016, where he achieved two league championships. He briefly played for Brazil's Fluminense in 2022. According to reports, the incident occurred in the Samanes region in northern Guayaquil, located approximately 265 kilometers southwest of Quito, the nation's capital.

Ecuador is currently grappling with escalating violence, with projections indicating over 9,000 homicides this year. The previous year witnessed 7,063 violent deaths, while 2023 registered 8,248. President Daniel Noboa has committed to combatting criminal organizations with ties to international drug trafficking in the nation.

This shooting is not an isolated event in Guayaquil, with previous incidents claiming the lives of footballers. In November, a stray bullet tragically killed a 16-year-old player from Independiente del Valle. Other victims include Maicol Valencia, Leandro Yépez, and Jonathan González, all of whom lost their lives to gun violence. These deaths accentuate the urgent security challenges in Ecuador and the necessity for enhanced protective measures for both citizens and athletes.
