DP World Collaborates with Afghanistan to Enhance Border Trade

Post by : Mara Collins

DP World has reached a significant agreement with the Afghan government to enhance the nation's critical land border points at Torkham and Hairatan. This initiative aims to upgrade Afghanistan’s pivotal trade gateways and reinforce its status as a crucial corridor linking Central and South Asia. Torkham and Hairatan are essential for trade with neighboring nations, processing billions of dollars in commerce annually, including more than USD 1.6 billion with Pakistan projected for 2024. However, outdated infrastructure and manual operations have hindered trade, making enhancements essential for improved operational efficiency and security at these borders.

Initiated as a Public–Private Partnership (PPP), this agreement mandates DP World to conduct a thorough technical and financial assessment prior to finalizing the concession. Proposed upgrades encompass modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art cargo handling systems, and digitized border operations to expedite trade and enhance safety and efficiency. The deal was formalized by Alhaj Mufti Abdul Mateen Saeed, Deputy Minister of Revenue and Customs of Afghanistan, and Nasser Al Neyadi, Executive Vice-President of DP World.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and Group CEO of DP World, emphasized that efficient trade corridors are vital for economic advancement. He remarked that modernizing Afghanistan’s borders will unlock significant trade potential and regional development opportunities, contributing to stability and economic progress.

The initiative will also prioritize local job creation, skills development, and strong collaboration with domestic partners. The Afghan government will retain control over customs, immigration, security, and regulatory functions, working alongside DP World to ensure smooth and secure operations at these essential trade hubs.

This collaboration underscores Afghanistan’s dedication to enhancing trade infrastructure and establishes DP World as a key strategic partner in fostering regional connectivity and economic growth.
