Vine is Back as Divine: Short Videos, No AI, Pure Human Creativity

Post by : Mina Carter

Fans of the short-form video platform Vine have a reason to celebrate. Evan Henshaw-Plath, one of Twitter’s original employees, is bringing back the beloved six-second video app — not as Vine, but under the new name Divine.

Divine aims to capture the spirit of the original Vine, which became famous for viral videos like “What are those?,” “It is Wednesday, my dudes,” and “Oh my God, they were roommates.” The app promises to focus on genuine human creativity, steering clear of AI-generated content. A press release emphasized that Divine “flags suspected GenAI content and prevents it from being posted.”

“Social media was social first. It's about humans and our connection, not just pretty videos,” said Henshaw-Plath, also known as Rabble. He added that Divine is his “attempt to fight back against the enshittification” of the internet — a term coined by Canadian writer Cory Doctorow to describe platforms deteriorating in the name of profit, often benefiting shareholders over users.

Currently in beta testing, Divine has already restored over 100,000 archived videos from the original Vine, giving fans a chance to relive some of the platform’s most memorable moments.

The project has received financial backing from Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s non-profit, And Other Stuff, which funds open-source projects with the potential to reshape social media.

Vine was acquired by Twitter in 2012, just a year before its debut. Despite its popularity, Twitter shut the platform down in 2017, a decision Dorsey has described as his biggest regret. Meanwhile, Elon Musk, who now owns X (formerly Twitter), has also expressed interest in reviving Vine. Earlier this year, he revealed that his team had located the original Vine video archive, though no release has been announced.

With Divine, Henshaw-Plath hopes to bring back a platform that prioritizes human creativity over algorithmic manipulation, giving social media users a space to share short, authentic moments once again.
