Airstrike Reduces Hospital to Ruins in Myanmar, 34 Lives Lost

An airstrike late at night in Rakhine state, Myanmar, has left a significant hospital in ruins, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 individuals, comprising both patients and healthcare workers. This tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in the township of Mrauk-U, which is currently under the control of the Arakan Army.

The attack took place around 9:13 pm, as military aircraft dropped two bombs. One directly hit the recovery ward, while the other impacted nearby the main building. The explosion caused extensive damage, leaving the hospital decimated, with shattered medical instruments, debris-filled hallways, and damaged vehicles littering the area.

Rescue personnel who arrived on the scene early Thursday confirmed that 17 men and 17 women were among those killed. Approximately 80 additional individuals sustained injuries, from shrapnel wounds to broken bones, placing immense pressure on the remaining local medical teams.

For many residing in Rakhine, this particular hospital had stood as the sole dependable source of healthcare due to the civil war's devastation of most medical facilities. Recently, it had resumed services with volunteer doctors who assembled in Mrauk-U to provide essential medical care.

Located about 530 kilometers northwest of Yangon, Mrauk-U has been under the control of the Arakan Army since February 2024. The group, which advocates for the Rakhine ethnic minority's interests, initiated a new offensive in November 2023, successfully seizing a pivotal army headquarters and 14 out of 17 townships in Rakhine—constituting one of the military's most significant territorial setbacks since the coup in 2021.

Historically known as Arakan, Rakhine has frequently been a location of ethnic strife. A military crackdown in 2017 led to the forced exodus of approximately 740,000 Rohingya Muslims into Bangladesh. Ongoing tensions between the Buddhist Rakhine community and the Rohingya persist amid continued clashes with military forces.

The shadow National Unity Government has condemned the attack on the hospital, calling for urgent global focus and humanitarian assistance. However, military officials have yet to acknowledge any operations within the area.

Four years post-coup, Myanmar remains in turmoil as widespread resistance lingers. As the military gears up for elections scheduled for December 28—dismissed by critics as a strategy to cling to power—the frequency of airstrikes and confrontations has escalated across several regions, including those held by pro-democracy factions.

The destruction of the Mrauk-U hospital embodies yet another grim chapter in the ongoing conflict, leaving countless individuals with fewer options for safety and medical support.
