Dubai: The Desert Vipers kicked off the DP World ILT20 season with a bang on Tuesday, snapping a six-match losing streak against the defending champions, Dubai Capitals. The Vipers clinched a thrilling four-wicket victory at Dubai International Stadium.
Choosing to bowl first, they showcased a committed bowling performance, restricting the Capitals to only 150 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Noor Ahmad, David Payne, and Khuzaima Tanveer were the stars with the ball, each taking two wickets to keep the defending champions in check.
While chasing a moderate target, Andries Gous spearheaded the innings with a swift half-century. Partnering with Fakhar Zaman, the duo provided a solid 50-run start. Zaman, who scored 26, was pivotal alongside Gous, who reached his fifty off just 32 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. A few quick wickets raised concerns for the Vipers, but Dan Lawrence and Khuzaima Tanveer ultimately steered the team to victory in 19 overs, marking their 21st win in the tournament—setting the record for the most wins by any franchise.
The Capitals faced early challenges, stumbling to 32 for 3 during the powerplay. Despite Rovman Powell’s 39 runs and Mohammad Nabi’s 29, they couldn’t amass a competitive total.
This match also highlighted the first official game for the newly formed squads post the October player auction. Each of the six franchises displayed well-composed lineups that meshed international stars with local talents from the UAE and associate nations, including participants from Saudi Arabia, complying with the league's team composition guidelines.
The confident display by the Desert Vipers sets a formidable tone for the season, clearly demonstrating their intention to vie for the championship once more.
