David Lee Steers Bengaluru Torpedoes to PVL 2025 Triumph

David Lee, a former Olympic gold medalist from the USA, has successfully guided the Bengaluru Torpedoes to victory in the 2025 Prime Volleyball League (PVL). His extensive experience over six years in India has provided him with insights into the evolving dynamics of Indian volleyball.

“The younger generation is starting to significantly impact the sport earlier in their careers,” remarked Lee, noting the enthusiasm and vigor that young players bring, replacing the veteran stars of the past. Although India has faced challenges on the international stage—failing to qualify for the Olympics and earning few Asian podium finishes since the 1980s—recent performances show hope, highlighted by a silver medal at this year's CAVA Nations League.

While Indian players are proficient in offensive maneuvers, such as spiking and blocking, Lee emphasized the pressing need for improvements in defense and ball control. “Countries like Japan, Korea, and China have focused on passing and defense; this is a crucial area for India to develop,” he stated.

The growth of volleyball in the country has been stifled by political turmoil within the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), which has faced recurring suspensions. Fortunately, the PVL has thrived independently, now consisting of ten teams and completing four successful seasons.

Lee advocates for longer PVL seasons and more national training camps to foster consistency and elevate the international experience necessary for India to rise in the global volleyball arena.
