In an electrifying game against the Utah Jazz, rookie Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks scored an impressive 42 points, breaking LeBron James' long-standing record for most points by an 18-year-old in NBA history. This milestone was achieved during Monday's intense 140-133 overtime loss.

Flagg played a crucial role in forcing overtime, hitting several key free throws in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter. He finished with 40 points by the end of regulation and added two more during overtime, yet his team fell short of victory. Notably, Anthony Davis was sidelined due to a calf injury.

Most of Flagg's scoring came from inside the paint and the charity stripe, wherein he shot 9-of-17 in the lane and converted 15 of 20 free throw attempts, including an astounding 24 points during the first half. His 42 points also tied the franchise record for most points scored by a rookie, sharing the honor with Mark Aguirre from 1981.

Earlier this season, Flagg encountered challenges playing at point guard but has since returned to his preferred forward position, showcasing the talent that made him the top draft pick last summer. In addition to his scoring spree, he contributed with seven rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.

Despite the loss, Flagg's performance stands out as a significant highlight in his budding career. He has upcoming opportunities to surpass his own record in games against the Detroit Pistons and the Philadelphia 76ers. With his 19th birthday approaching this Sunday, Flagg has much to celebrate following this impressive feat.
