After 37 Years, Acid Attack Convict Nabbed Posing as Sadhu

A man, sentenced to life for a 1986 acid attack, has been apprehended after evading authorities for nearly 37 years. Known as Rajesh, or Raju, he was found in Madhya Pradesh living under the guise of a sadhu, police reported on Friday.

Law enforcement officials traced Rajesh to the Gayatri Shaktipith in Shivpuri district. Following his 1988 conviction, he had disappeared after being released on bail and failed to return to court, prompting a warrant for his arrest that he successfully evaded for decades.

The incident dates back to August 1986 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, when two men, Gangadeen and Om Prakash Rastogi, were attacked while en route to their jewellery shop, carrying a bottle of acid for cleaning purposes. Rajesh allegedly assaulted them, inflicting serious injuries by throwing the acid.

Convicted of grievous harm and attempted murder, he received a life sentence plus an additional seven years. However, he absconded shortly after being granted bail.

To avoid capture, Rajesh shifted between various religious sites, spending brief periods at multiple locations. In recent years, he established a residence in Shivpuri while masquerading as a monk. His eventual arrest was aided by advanced surveillance techniques, including fingerprint verification using the NAFIS system. He has since been placed in judicial custody.
