A heart-wrenching incident occurred aboard an EasyJet flight from Malaga, Spain, to London Gatwick, where a British family allegedly boarded their 89-year-old grandmother, who some passengers claim had already passed away before take-off.
This unfortunate event unfolded on December 18, 2025, when the family of five arrived at the airport with the elderly woman in a wheelchair. They informed airline personnel that she was simply tired and not feeling well.
Fellow flyers observed that the woman appeared unresponsive and slumped in her chair. Several passengers took to social media to report that a medical professional onboard assessed the situation and declared her deceased.
Despite these worries, the woman was permitted to board, with staff referencing a valid medical certificate asserting her fitness to fly.
As preparations for take-off commenced, cabin crew identified a problem. Upon checking on the woman, they quickly recognized she had passed away, prompting the return of the aircraft to the terminal.
Emergency responders boarded and confirmed her death, leading to a flight delay of approximately 12 hours, causing significant frustration among passengers.
Online reactions were intense, with many expressing outrage that the family was allowed to travel with the deceased. One passenger noted that someone was supporting her head as they transported her to her seat.
Conversely, other passengers urged empathy for the grieving family, acknowledging the distressing nature of the incident for everyone involved, including the crew members.
Spanish authorities reported being notified regarding the woman’s state and confirmed her death onboard. They clarified that she was allowed to fly due to presenting a medical document as well as receiving aid throughout her journey.
The airline maintained that she was alive upon boarding, and the flight returned to the terminal after a passenger required urgent medical assistance. The airline expressed their support for the bereaved family and appreciated the passengers' understanding during this incident.
The family has yet to comment on the allegations.
This incident has sparked a larger discussion surrounding medical checks prior to flights and the protocols in place at airports during such tragic scenarios.
