The acclaimed Cinematheque Francaise in Paris has decided to close its four screening areas temporarily after a series of bedbug sightings, coinciding with a well-attended master class featuring the legendary Sigourney Weaver. The month-long closure, announced on Friday, aims to create a “perfectly safe and comfortable environment” for all guests.
The decision was made after several weeks of reports from patrons. In early November, attendees noted bites and bedbugs during Weaver’s session, with some individuals recounting their encounters with the insects crawling on seats and clothing in interviews. The growing complaints prompted immediate action from the institution.
Situated in eastern Paris, the Cinematheque typically hosts public screenings in three halls, while the fourth is dedicated to educational programs. Currently, all screening areas are closed for an extensive cleaning. Every seat will be taken apart and treated multiple times with steam at 180°C before being examined by trained detection dogs. Carpets and floors will receive equivalent thorough care.
Elsewhere in the building, such as the ongoing exhibition on Orson Welles, remains accessible. However, the suspended film screenings represent an unusual full-scale interruption for the renowned archive, which is celebrated for its preservation of cinematic history.
In recent years, bedbug problems have increasingly surfaced across France. In 2023, infestations were reported in venues like cinemas, hospitals, and public transit as the nation prepares for the 2024 Olympics. This situation has led to a nationwide cleaning initiative and heightened public anxiety, further fueled by social media speculation.
Bedbugs are known to lurk in mattresses, clothing, luggage, and tight spaces. Their bites can lead to red patches, itching, and swelling, causing stress and sleep disturbances for those affected.
The Cinematheque is working to finalize its cleaning efforts by next month and hopes to reopen its halls to film enthusiasts once the necessary safety checks have been completed.
