China Presses the US for Leadership in Nuclear Disarmament Following Pentagon Concerns

China has called for the United States to assume more responsibility in nuclear disarmament after a draft Pentagon report indicated that Beijing is enhancing its nuclear missile capabilities and shows little interest in arms control negotiations.

During a routine press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that the US, possessing one of the largest nuclear arsenals globally, should spearhead efforts to reduce nuclear stockpiles. He outlined that the US should foster an environment conducive to disarmament discussions among other nuclear-armed nations.

The Pentagon's report suggests that China has likely deployed nuclear warheads on over 100 intercontinental ballistic missiles and appears disinterested in engaging in arms control talks with Washington. These assertions have raised tensions in the military and security sectors between the two nations.

China dismissed the report's interpretations, arguing that it fails to capture the complete narrative. Lin reiterated Beijing's longstanding stance that its nuclear forces are maintained at the minimum required for national defense and asserted that China does not seek nuclear rivalry, adhering instead to a defensive posture.

Chinese officials have reiterated their commitment to a no-first-use policy concerning nuclear weapons—ensuring that such weapons will only be utilized in response to an attack. Beijing believes this approach signifies its dedication to peace and stability, even amid military modernization efforts.

China insists that discussions on nuclear disarmament must commence with the nations holding the majority of nuclear weapons.
