In the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames made two important picks, choosing young centres Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter to add to their future roster .
Cole Reschny, from the Victoria Royals (Western Hockey League), was picked 18th overall. He’s known for his speed, playmaking ability, and strong defensive play. Last season, he notched 92 points in 62 games—including 66 assists, a Victoria Royals record .
Cullen Potter, playing for Arizona State University in the NCAA, was chosen 32nd overall, the final pick of the first round. At just 17, he recorded 13 goals and 9 assists in 35 college games, and he won a bronze medal at the U18 World Championships .
Filling a position of need: Calgary needed centre depth. General Manager Craig Conroy said both players bring the skill, speed, and competitiveness the team wants .
High-end talent: Reschny is praised for performing well under playoff pressure and being a three-zone player—offense, defense, and transition . Potter is celebrated for his electric skating and hockey sense, even if he’s smaller than average.
Development paths:
Reschny plans to play next year at the University of North Dakota before starting his pro career .
