Tragic Bondi Beach Shooting: 15 Lives Lost, Suspect Facing Multiple Charges

Australia is reeling from a tragic terror attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney that resulted in 15 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Naveed Akram, the only surviving suspect, has been charged with 59 criminal counts, including 15 murder charges and one for conducting a terrorist act, as reported by New South Wales (NSW) Police.

Charges Against Naveed Akram

  • 15 counts of murder

  • 40 counts of grievous bodily harm with intent to kill

  • 1 count of engaging in a terrorist act

  • 1 count of displaying a terrorist organization symbol

Akram is reportedly critically injured and made his court appearance from his hospital bed. The proceedings are adjourned until April 2026, confirmed by NSW courts.

Father Killed in Confrontation with Police

In a tragic turn, Akram's father, Sajid Akram (50), was fatally shot during a gunfight with police at the crime scene. Authorities later disclosed that Sajid was originally from Hyderabad, India, and had minimal contact with relatives there.

Targeting the Jewish Community

The attack was specifically aimed at Australia's Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration. Victims included:

  • Two rabbis

  • A Holocaust survivor

  • Matilda, a 10-year-old girl

  • Boris and Sofia Gurman, who were seen confronting the attacker

Confirmation of Terror Links

NSW Police have officially classified the event as a terrorist attack.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the violence was allegedly driven by motives linked to ISIS.

Travel to the Philippines Under Scrutiny

Naveed and Sajid Akram had traveled to the Philippines between 1 November and 28 November, with Davao City as their endpoint.

  • Naveed used an Australian passport

  • Sajid carried an Indian passport

Injuries to Victims and Police

  • 20 victims remain hospitalized throughout Sydney

  • One civilian is currently in critical condition

  • Two police officers sustained injuries

  • Officer Jack Hibbert (22) has lost vision in one eye and faces a lengthy recovery

Community Mourning and Response

A floral tribute has been created at Bondi Beach.
The first funeral was held for Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who had a key role in organizing the Hanukkah celebration.

Rabbi Levi Wolff described his passing as an “unspeakable loss”, praising his lifelong contributions to the community.

Funerals for the other victims, including young Matilda, are scheduled for the upcoming days.

Political Reactions

Jewish leaders have criticized PM Albanese for his absence at the funeral. In his defense, he mentioned initiatives to combat antisemitism like:

  • Appointment of Australia's first antisemitism envoy

  • Introduction of stricter hate-speech regulations

  • Boosting funds for Jewish institutions and community cohesion projects
