Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Winter Session of Parliament with a strong emphasis on the significant democracy showcased in the recent Bihar elections. He lauded the impressive turnout, particularly among women voters, which he described as a testament to India’s democratic fabric.
Modi's address also contained a sharp message directed towards the Opposition, which has been grappling with the aftermath of their defeat in the Bihar assembly elections. Without mentioning any political party directly, he urged leaders to refrain from unnecessary disruptions in the House and instead focus on meaningful contributions. He remarked that their recent comments suggested they were still affected by the Bihar results.
In a significant win, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured 202 seats out of 243, compared to just 35 for the Congress-led INDIA coalition. PM Modi cautioned against letting this victory foster complacency within the ruling alliance, stressing that the goal of Parliament should be serious legislative progress.
Running until December 19, the Winter Session is predicted to face challenges, particularly regarding the Opposition's insistence on discussing the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Following Sunday’s all-party meeting and discussions in the Business Advisory Committee, members of the Opposition strongly indicated that a smooth session would be unattainable without addressing the SIR. Some expressed that the government would be held accountable for any disruption in the House.
However, after the all-party gathering, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju noted that no party threatened to obstruct the proceedings. He reaffirmed the government's dedication to ensuring the House functions and highlighted that disagreements should not hinder productive discussions.
In addition, the government plans to introduce 10 new bills and commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram during this session. With both sides firmly entrenched in their positions, the opening day hinted at potential clashes, even as appeals for cooperation and restraint persist.
