Political Tensions Rise as Bangladesh Student Leader Shot in Khulna

As Bangladesh approaches its elections, political unrest is intensifying. A student leader was shot in the head on Monday in Khulna by unidentified assailants.

The victim, identified as Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar, is a significant figure in the National Citizen Party (NCP), especially within its labour wing.

The attack took place around 11:45 am at his residence in Sonadanga, with reports indicating that the gunmen fired at close range while Sikdar was inside.

Sikdar sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of his head and was promptly taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital. He has since been transferred to another facility for a CT scan to assess the injury's extent and is currently under medical supervision.

At the time of the shooting, he was preparing for an upcoming labour rally organized by his party, serving as key coordinator of the NCP's labour group.

Authorities have confirmed the incident and are actively investigating. Police are working to identify the shooters and clarify the motivation behind the attack on this student leader.

This incident comes amidst heightened tensions in Bangladesh, following violent protests triggered by the assassination of a controversial political figure earlier this month, leading to unrest in multiple cities.

With national elections scheduled for February 2026, the political atmosphere remains highly charged, alongside rising reports of street fights and increasing fears within minority communities.

Experts warn that such violent acts underscore the deteriorating security landscape. Concerns grow that hostility could escalate as the election date nears.
