On Monday evening, dead fish were observed floating in various areas of the Al Muzoon Canal, leading to a swift action from the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi. It was revealed that an algal bloom had appeared in the canal, diminishing the oxygen levels and creating a perilous environment for aquatic life.
Initial evaluations shared via the agency's social platforms indicated that the bloom likely resulted from increased nutrient content alongside diminished water flow in the canal. These factors facilitate rapid algae growth, which may sometimes become toxic, disrupting the aquatic ecosystem.
Overnight, teams were deployed to initiate the cleanup of the deceased fish and to implement disposal processes. Additionally, water and fish samples were taken to assess the extent and behavior of the algal bloom. Ongoing monitoring is in effect to observe any further alterations in the canal’s ecological conditions.
While the underlying causes continue to be investigated, officials are conducting a thorough technical evaluation. Updates will follow once final reports are available. In the meantime, residents are urged to report similar occurrences so that authorities can act promptly within the emirate.
