Aleema Khan Takes Legal Action Amid Imran Khan Jail Meeting Tensions

Post by : Raina Carter

On Friday, Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, filed a contempt of court petition with the Islamabad High Court after being denied visitation rights at Adiala Jail. This action was taken during a public gathering that included Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and a group of supporters, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding her brother’s incarceration.

The petition asserts that the Islamabad High Court had mandated a visitation schedule allowing Imran Khan to meet family members every Tuesday and Thursday, as ordered on March 24. Aleema claims that officials at Adiala Jail have repeatedly flouted these court instructions, barring her from seeing Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023.

In her legal plea, she urged the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the jail superintendent, Abdul Ghafoor Anjum, and other governmental officials, including Captain (retd) Muhammad Khurram Agha of the Federal Interior Ministry, Noorul Amin from the Punjab Home Department, and Raja Aizaz Azeem, the SHO of Saddar Beroni police station. Aleema emphasized that her brother's legal rights and the degree of humane treatment he deserves have been compromised by the authorities’ refusal to comply with judicial commands.

Aleema and Chief Minister Afridi participated in a lengthy sit-in outside the prison that lasted almost sixteen hours, expressing their frustration after being denied entry to meet with Imran Khan. Their efforts to connect with the former prime minister have since deepened dissatisfaction among his supporters.

Following their setback, Afridi attempted to meet with the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court but was informed there would be no meeting. Addressing local media, the chief minister expressed concerns that ongoing restrictions might disrupt legislative activities as a form of protest. Inside the Senate, lawmakers voiced their worries regarding Imran Khan’s continued imprisonment.

Afridi announced plans to rally supporters outside the Islamabad High Court and Adiala Jail next Tuesday as part of their persistent campaign for permission to meet Imran Khan. He conveyed his exasperation over the lack of avenues available for him to see the former leader.

Despite rising worries about Imran Khan's health, authorities have dismissed claims of any deterioration, with Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry assuring Parliament that the ex-prime minister is in stable condition and receiving perks, such as meals prepared by a private chef—privileges not extended to other inmates.

Afridi, inaugurated as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister last month, underscored that ensuring access to Imran Khan remains a primary goal for him. Despite repeated attempts, he has been unable to secure a visit. His latest initiative culminated in a sit-in at the prison gates, as he vowed to persist until his brother's rights are honored.

He reiterated that their campaign will persist until compliance with court orders is achieved. He firmly stated that their actions are justified under constitutional rights and that they won't give up their demands.
