Bondi Faces Fierce Senate Scrutiny Over DOJ Actions and Priorities

Post by : Mina Carter

United States Attorney General Pam Bondi faced intense questioning Tuesday at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, as Democrats accused her of politicizing the Department of Justice (DOJ), while Republicans backed her pledge to restore the agency’s core mission.

Focus on Violent Crime and DOJ Priorities

In her first appearance before the Republican-controlled committee since former FBI Director James Comey’s indictment, Bondi emphasized her commitment to ending the “weaponization of justice” and refocusing the DOJ on violent crime. She highlighted increased federal enforcement in Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee, as evidence of the department returning to its core mission.

Bondi also defended deploying National Guard troops to cities like Chicago and Portland, citing failures by local authorities to maintain public safety. She linked law enforcement challenges to the ongoing government shutdown, attributing blame to Democrats for undermining readiness.

Comey Indictment Sparks Debate

A key moment in the hearing was Bondi’s defense of prosecuting Comey, a long-time critic of former President Donald Trump. Comey faces charges of false statements and obstruction of Congress over his 2020 testimony and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Democrats questioned whether the indictment stemmed from independent judgment or political influence. Bondi declined to answer questions about her private White House conversations, labeling them “personnel matters.”

Jeffrey Epstein Files and Alleged Corruption

The attorney general also faced scrutiny over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein documents. She refused to explain her reversal on releasing the files, instead accusing Democratic senators of taking campaign donations from an Epstein affiliate.

Democrats pressed Bondi on allegations against former border czar Tom Homan, who reportedly accepted $50,000 in cash from undercover agents before the current administration. Bondi stated that dropping the inquiry predated her tenure and did not confirm whether the money had been recovered.

Democrats Accuse Bondi of Weaponizing DOJ

Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the committee’s top Democrat, repeatedly accused Bondi of using her leadership to shield the president and allies from accountability. Durbin said, “Our nation’s top law enforcement agency has become a shield for the president and his political allies when they engage in misconduct,” warning that Bondi’s actions had left “an enormous stain on American history.”

Since Bondi assumed office, key DOJ divisions, including civil rights, have seen mass departures. Career prosecutors linked to Trump-related or January 6 investigations have been removed or reassigned. A letter from nearly 300 former DOJ employees released ahead of the hearing warned that longstanding departmental work was being undermined and called for a return to institutional norms.

Republicans Defend Bondi

Republican members largely supported Bondi, asserting that the previous Biden administration had politicized the DOJ with criminal cases against Trump. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley praised Bondi for realigning departmental priorities and emphasized the need for law enforcement to follow a clear direction.
