England Urged to Rethink Strategy to Revive Ashes
After a poor start to the Ashes, England must change their game plan quickly, says former Australia
Tottenham Hotspur and England forward Jess Naz will sit out the remainder of the season after sustaining a significant ACL injury. The 25-year-old athlete was injured during Spurs’ crucial victory against Aston Villa on Sunday. She will require surgery on her right knee for recovery.
This marks her second ACL injury throughout her career, having previously missed the entire 2019-20 Women's Super League season due to damage to her other knee's ACL. Losing Naz is a major setback for Tottenham, as she has featured in every WSL match this season. She also boasts six caps for England, having recently participated in matches against Brazil and Australia.
Naz isn't alone in this struggle; fellow England players Michelle Agyemang and Katie Reid have also dealt with ACL injuries this season. There are rising concerns among experts and players about the heavy match calendar. Recently, England and Chelsea star Keira Walsh urged football authorities to heed players' warnings about fixture congestion, which she believes contributes to the increasing incidence of knee injuries.
Since the 2023 WSL season commenced, numerous players have faced extended absences due to ACL issues, including Agyemang, Maite Oroz, Marie Höbinger, Manu Zinsberger, Sophie Roman Haug, Jill Baijings, Reid, and now Naz. This troubling trend underscores the urgent need for improved player welfare, safer scheduling, and enhanced injury prevention strategies in women’s football. As Naz enters her recovery phase, fans and teams alike will eagerly await updates, wishing her a strong return to both club and national football.
