A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Bangladesh early Friday, prompting mild tremors in eastern India. Occurring at 10:08 am IST, the quake's epicentre was situated roughly 14 kilometres from Narsingdi and 10 kilometres east-southeast of Dhaka.
Residents across Kolkata and nearby areas reported sensations of the ground shaking, with fans oscillating and wall decorations slightly swaying. Many took to social media to document the event, sharing videos and pictures of the tremors.
People in other West Bengal regions, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar, also felt the tremors. States like Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram were subject to light shaking as well. Thankfully, authorities confirmed there have been no injury or damage reports thus far.
Experts attribute earthquakes in this area to the movement between the Indian tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate. This region, also encompassing northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, is known for its seismic activity, often experiencing moderate to strong earthquakes that can extend across borders.
Additionally, a separate earthquake measuring 3.9 in magnitude shook Pakistan on Thursday at a shallow depth of 10 km. Such shallow seismic events are usually more detrimental, as the seismic waves reach the surface in less distance, resulting in stronger shakes.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant against aftershocks and adhere to safety protocols should future tremors occur. Authorities are diligently monitoring developments and will issue updates as new information emerges.
