4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, A Troubling Trend

Post by : Raina Carter

Kabul: An earthquake registering 4.6 on the Richter scale rocked Afghanistan early Thursday morning, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at 2:20 AM IST and struck at a depth of 140 kilometers, with its epicenter pinpointed at latitude 36.43°N and longitude 71.20°E.

This event marks the third tremor in Afghanistan this November, highlighting the country’s susceptibility to seismic events. Its geological position, situated along several active fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, raises the risk of frequent earthquakes.

Previously, on November 8, a 4.4 magnitude tremor was recorded at a depth of 180 kilometers, while a powerful 6.3 magnitude quake on November 4 caused extensive devastation in northern regions, claiming at least 27 lives and injuring around 956 individuals. This quake inflicted considerable structural damage, notably to historic mosques near Mazar-i-Sharif.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reports Afghanistan as one of the most disaster-prone countries, regularly hit by earthquakes, landslides, and flooding. The Hindu Kush Mountain range, traversing much of northern Afghanistan, is recognized as one of the world’s most seismically active areas.

Years of conflict, economic struggles, and infrastructure inadequacies have rendered Afghan communities exceedingly vulnerable to such disasters. Experts alarmingly note that Afghanistan’s limited emergency response capabilities mean that even moderate earthquakes can lead to catastrophic outcomes.

With ongoing seismic activity, humanitarian organizations have stressed the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure to mitigate future losses in lives and properties during such events.
