Roi Roi Binale — Zubeen Garg’s Last Screen Project Arrives Oct 31

Assam’s cherished artist and singer Zubeen Garg’s final cinematic endeavour, Roi Roi Binale, will be released in 46 cities across India on October 31. Completed after the musician’s untimely death last month in Singapore, the film is set to be an emotional moment for fans who followed his long career.

Across a 33-year journey, Garg—who died aged 52—lent his voice to songs in more than 40 languages and dialects, building a vast body of work. For many admirers, this film is more than a last appearance: it is the fulfilment of a dream that celebrates love, music and shared humanity.

A Project Close to His Heart

Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan, the picture originated from Garg’s own creative impulse. He portrays a visually impaired musician on screen, and Bhuyan says finishing the film without him was among the toughest challenges of his career.

“This was Zubeen’s final undertaking, and we are determined to bring it to audiences,” Bhuyan said with visible emotion. “He left us near the end, but this was his dream and we will honour it.”

Bhuyan added that the story had been in Garg’s mind for almost 19 years, reflecting many of the singer’s convictions and artistic sensibilities.

Music as a Living Tribute

Music remains central to Garg’s legacy, and Roi Roi Binale carries that musical heartbeat. Poran Borkatoky handled the background score, stepping in to complete what Garg had planned to compose himself.

“Zubeen was supposed to finish the background music. Being asked to complete it was deeply moving,” Borkatoky said. “Many of us learnt our craft listening to Zubeen. We tried to channel everything we absorbed from him into this soundtrack.”

Script Guided by His Vision

Writer Rahul Gautam Sharma collaborated with Garg from 2022 to shape the screenplay. He says the film reflects the late artist’s aesthetic, social views and political outlook.

“I’ve spent nearly three years writing this. It embodies Zubeen’s beliefs—his artistic ideals, his social stance and his calls for unity and peace,” Sharma said. “The hardest part is that he cannot offer his final notes now.”

A Gentle Romance Centered on Song

Roi Roi Binale is being billed as Assam’s first full-scale musical feature. Bhuyan describes it as a tender romantic drama that prioritises melody and emotion over action.

“Zubeen wanted a film that focused on love and music,” the director said. “There’s no violence, only songs and feeling—he trusted audiences would connect with the film’s sincerity.”

Cast and Crew Reflect on the Journey

Co-star Achurjya Borpatra expressed gratitude at being part of the project. “It’s an honour to appear in Zubeen Da’s last film. He was a legend to us, and acting alongside him is something I’ll always treasure,” he said.

Editor Pratim Khaund spoke of the emotional weight of post-production: “Accepting that he’s gone is hard. Zubeen’s presence was felt in every frame—we hope viewers sense him throughout the film.”

A Statewide Salute to an Icon

In recognition of Garg’s immense cultural contribution, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam government will donate the film’s entire GST proceeds to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, the trust Garg founded to aid disadvantaged artists and students.

In a rare gesture of collective homage, cinemas across Assam will suspend other screenings from October 31 and show only Roi Roi Binale as a mark of respect.

From blockbuster Assamese hits to memorable Hindi numbers, Zubeen Garg’s influence on the subcontinent’s music scene endures. His creative path—from chart-topping songs to this final film—has left a lasting imprint on generations.

As theatres prepare to screen his last film, many see Roi Roi Binale not as a closing chapter but as a celebration of an artist who devoted his life to song, love and humanity.
