Mamdani Surges as New Yorkers Head to the Polls in 2025 Mayoral Race

New York: Voting stations across all five boroughs opened Tuesday morning for the 2025 New York mayoral election, the closing chapter of a hotly contested race. Polls began taking ballots at 6:00 am and will remain open until 9:00 pm (GMT), with nearly five million registered New Yorkers eligible to vote.

The New York City Board of Elections reports a record 734,317 early ballots submitted during the nine-day advance voting period—more than quadrupling early participation compared with 2021.

In the RealClearPolitics polling average, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani leads with 46.1%, holding a 14.3-point edge over independent Andrew Cuomo, who stands at 31.8%, while Republican Curtis Sliwa trails at 16.3%.

Mamdani, a Queens state Assembly member and a first-generation immigrant of South Asian and Ugandan descent, has energized younger and progressive voters with a platform that includes universal free childcare, fare-free buses and a freeze on city rents. Supporters cast his campaign as a generational shift toward grassroots, equity-focused city governance.

His surge follows former mayor Eric Adams' withdrawal earlier this year after a federal bribery case—subsequently dismissed—led to his resignation and opened the field to new contenders.

Andrew Cuomo, the former governor running as an independent, frames his bid around public safety, economic recovery and infrastructure renewal, offering a centrist contrast to Mamdani’s agenda. Cuomo’s campaign drew unexpected endorsements from President Donald Trump and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk on Monday, a pairing analysts say could appeal to moderate voters.

Republican Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder, remains focused on law-and-order initiatives, animal welfare and reducing homelessness but continues to sit well behind the two leading candidates in the polls.

Observers expect robust turnout as voters choose between sharply different visions for the city—Mamdani’s progressive blueprint, Cuomo’s centrist revival strategy and Sliwa’s law-and-order emphasis.

Beyond deciding City Hall’s direction for the next four years, the outcome is likely to influence the national debate over urban leadership and the future of progressive politics in the United States.
